The European Research Council supports frontier research, cross disciplinary proposals and pioneering ideas in new and emerging fields which introduce unconventional and innovative approaches.

Objectives

The ERC's mission is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-driven frontier research across all fields of research, on the basis of scientific excellence.

ERC grant applications can only be submitted in response to a Call for Proposals through the European Commission’s Participant Portal.

Limitations

ERC Starting Grant

• for young, early-career top researchers (2-7 years after PhD)
• up to 1.5 million euro for 5 years, 
• at least one important publication as main author or without the participation of their PhD supervisor, other significant publications (as main author) in major international peer-reviewed multidisciplinary scientific journals (at least 5), invited presentations in well-established international conferences, granted patents, awards, prizes, etc.
• a minimum of 50% of their working time on the ERC project

ERC Consolidator Grant

• for already independent excellent researchers 7-12 years after PhD)
• up to 2 million euro for 5 years
• several important publications as main author or without the participation of their PhD supervisor (about 10), invited presentations in well-established international conferences, granted patents, awards, prizes, etc. 
• a minimum of 40% of their working time on the ERC project
